Ambrosia Applesauce 5 Ways

Take a Classic Recipe to New Heights

Ambrosia apple sauceWith the brand new harvest, why not make some applesauce?

If you’ve never made applesauce with Ambrosia apples, you need to start there. Ambrosia apples are naturally sweet which means there’s no sugar required to make Ambrosia applesauce feel like a treat. If you’re still not convinced, we’ve come up with 5 new ways to up your applesauce game.

Golden Spice Applesauce

Golden Milk is all the rage because it contains Ayruvedic spices like turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. The Golden Spice Applesauce recipe is simply the classic Ambrosia applesauce recipe with these spices added at the cooking stage. The amount of the spice is up to your taste. If you want to make this delight even more decadent, blend in coconut cream and a dash of honey once the sauce has cooled.  Or, do it in a Crockpot for a few more hours and turn it into an Ambrosia Apple Butter.

Chia Applesauce

Chia seeds are amazing – they contain omega fatty acids, fibre, antioxidants, minerals, and protein. Plus, when they get wet they turn almost jelly-like. So, when you combine them with Ambrosia applesauce (just after you’ve blended it), it creates a fun dessert. Just give the seeds about 30 minutes to absorb the liquid. If you want a smoother consistency, you can blend the seeds with the cooked Ambrosia apples and then let set.

Raw and Instant

One of the great things about Ambrosia apples is that they are slow to brown. A lot of people shy away from raw apple sauce (which is basically just pureed apples with a dash of lemon) because it turns brown so quickly. You don’t have that problem with Ambrosia! You can have applesauce in just a few minutes by coring the apples (peeling is optional but the peels do offer some health benefits), and popping them into a blender or food processor until smooth. Add a squeeze of lemon to taste and a dash of cinnamon if you like. That’s it. It’s ready to eat.

Cranberry Ambrosia Applesauce

There are many things you can pair with Ambrosia apples to make a mixed fruit sauce – pears, blueberries, dates – the list goes on. We like to mix in fresh cranberries because the tartness of the berries nicely balances out the sweetness of Ambrosia apples. The result is a perfectly refreshing (and tangy) sauce. To make it, add a handful of fresh cranberries to the classic Ambrosia applesauce recipe at the cooking stage. Make sure you taste it while it’s still a bit hot because if it’s just too tart for you, you can add a spoonful of honey or maple syrup until it suits your palate.

Frozen Ambrosia Granita

Save some of your applesauce for a hot summer day! If you have an ice cream machine you can pop your classic Ambrosia applesauce in and get a delicious sorbet. Adding a bit of sugar will make the consistency a little smoother.  If you don’t have a machine, you can still make a frozen treat. Simply lay parchment paper (or wax paper) on a baking sheet. Then, spread the classic Ambrosia applesauce over top and place in the freezer for several hours. Once it’s fully frozen, scrape it off and form it into balls to serve. Depending on how cold your freezer is, you may need to let it warm up a bit before scraping.

Wow, here are 5 fresh ideas for Ambrosia applesauce. You know what? We could have gone on and on because there are so many more options!
