In the Test Kitchen with Smoothies

Ambrosia apples smoothie recipiesThere’s no question that Ambrosia apples taste great as juice or in a smoothie. But, is one better than the other? In a previous blog, we compared these two popular ways of drinking your favourite apple. We love Ambrosia apple juice, and believe it definitely has its place, but for this blog, we decided to focus on smoothies.

One of the health benefits of Ambrosia apples is that they are an excellent source of fibre. Plus, all of the nutrition is maintained.

In the test kitchen, we tried various combinations of smoothies, and included Ambrosia apples in each of them. In all cases, we added the water to make it easier to blend, and we did not peel the apples, as we love the texture they bring, as well as the nutritional value. All that is required is a blender – put all of the ingredients in and blend on high speed for 2-3 minutes. Each recipe yielded two servings.

Here are a few recipes from our delicious experiments, and the testing results.

Ambrosia Apple, Beet, and Carrot Smoothie

2 Ambrosia apples – cored
1 large carrot
1 large beet – peeled
½ c water

We enjoyed this one, but honestly thought it would make a better juice. The consistency – no matter how long we blended it for – was a little grainy. We would perhaps throw in some fresh ginger to give it a little snap.

Ambrosia Apple, Blueberry, and Banana Smoothie

1 Ambrosia apple – cored
1 c blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1 banana
½ c water

This was quite delicious, and the banana gave it a lovely creaminess. So good, we thought we’d add even more…

Ambrosia Apple Green Smoothie

1 Ambrosia apple – cored
½ c blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1 banana
2 c spinach
½ c water

We absolutely loved this one. The apple gave it some texture, the banana gave it creaminess, and we were very pleased that the spinach gave us some iron.

The long and the short of it is that anything can be added into smoothies, you are restricted only by your imagination and – perhaps more importantly! – what fruit you have on hand. Remember, frozen fruit works very well! We’d love to hear your results: #AmbrosiaApples
