Ingredients:

  • 6-8 medium-sized Ambrosia apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: A squeeze of lemon juice to enhance flavour and prevent browning

Instructions:

  1. Selecting the Ambrosia Apples:

Choose fresh, firm apples. Wash and thoroughly dry the apples before slicing.

  1. Preparation:   Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C)—line baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Slicing the Ambrosia Apples:

Use a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer to create uniform slices, approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. If you have an apple corer, remove the cores before slicing for a more even drying process.

  1. Spiced Sugar Mixture:

In a bowl, combine granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to create a spiced sugar mixture.

  1. Coating the Apple Slices:

Lay the apple slices flat and coat each slice evenly with the spiced sugar mixture.

  1. Arranging on Baking Sheets:

Place the coated Ambrosia apple slices on the prepared baking sheets in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap. This allows for proper air circulation during the drying process.

  1. Drying in the Oven:

Place the baking sheets in the oven and let the apple slices dry for 2 to 3 hours. Halfway through, flip the slices to ensure even drying. Keep a close eye on them, as the exact time may vary based on your oven and the thickness of the slices. The dried apple slices should be pliable and slightly leathery when done.

  1. Cooling and Storing:

Allow the dried spiced apple slices to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. Properly dried slices can last several weeks, making them a perfect snack for on-the-go or a thoughtful homemade gift.

Of course, these are a candied treat, especially in the Holiday Season, but Ambrosia apples are naturally sweet and taste delicious without the spiced sugar coating! Whether enjoyed as a snack, added to cereals, or included in a cozy gift basket, these dried spiced apple slices are a treat to be enjoyed throughout the year.
